Early Rain church says Wang Yi's family had fewer than five visits in nearly eight years; health claims remain unverified

In an October 3 open letter, Early Rain Covenant Church said Wang Yi's family had been able to visit him fewer than five times in nearly eight years and that normal visits, correspondence and calls remained restricted. The church called for accurate health, examination and treatment information. The letter did not confirm an advanced-liver-cancer diagnosis or include medical records, so Wang's actual condition remains unverified.

WHY IT MATTERS

Wang Yi is one of China's most prominent house-church pastors and is serving a prison sentence in Sichuan's Jintang Prison. Transparent medical information, family access and independent examination for people in custody directly concern health, religious freedom and detention conditions.

Full report

Update (October 3, 2026): In an open letter posted October 3 on its official public channel, Early Rain Covenant Church said Wang Yi's family had been able to visit him fewer than five times in the nearly eight years since his 2018 arrest, while normal visits, correspondence and calls remained tightly restricted. The church asked prison authorities to protect visitation and communication rights, disclose accurate health, examination and treatment information, and arrange timely and adequate medical care. The letter did not confirm an advanced-liver-cancer diagnosis or provide a diagnosis or other medical record.[5]

On September 28, ChinaAid said sources inside China had told the organization that Early Rain Covenant Church pastor Wang Yi might have been diagnosed with advanced liver cancer. ChinaAid also explicitly said that restrictions on Wang's outside communication and family visits prevented it from independently verifying the diagnosis or his actual condition. It called for disclosure of medical information, family access and an independent examination.[1][2]

In an update published on the evening of September 29, Taiwan Church News said US-based writer Yu Jie had checked with Wang's family that day. According to the report, the family had spoken with prison staff, who said a recent examination showed normal liver and kidney function. The article also quoted a church figure cautioning that this remained a one-sided account from prison authorities: the underlying medical report had not been made public or independently verified.[3]

As of this review, no publicly verifiable diagnosis, imaging or pathology report, independent medical examination, hospitalization or treatment arrangement has emerged. Nor has the Sichuan prison administration or Jintang Prison issued a written response that can be independently checked. The claim of advanced liver cancer therefore cannot be presented as established fact, while the prison's account relayed through the family does not establish Wang's complete medical condition. This record is classified as developing and will be updated if verifiable information emerges from Wang's family, lawyers, church, medical documentation or authorities.[1][3]

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom continues to list Wang as an imprisoned religious prisoner of conscience. Its database records his detention on December 9, 2018, sentencing to nine years on December 30, 2019, and current location at Jintang Prison in Chengdu; it also notes reports of medical neglect. Those detention details are verifiable background, but they do not substantiate the current cancer claim.[4]
